Week 1
I enjoyed this weeks ted talk a lot, the topic of technology and how it has changed the world is very interesting to me and I find myself pondering it in my own time. Some thoughts that usually come to me are if all this advancement is beneficial in the end especially the way that society uses technology “the newer the better” is almost always the narrative. But this is not always true because even if something is more capable doesn’t mean the person using it is more capable with it or if that someone having the capabilities is truly going to benefit their lives. Technology has made the world always pushing for the next advancement which is good but at some points it seems that forward isn’t always forward. With everything in life there is positive and negative and I feel like technology is positive in that it pushes what we are and what we are capable of but on the other hand we forget where have came from. Before all the technology was in the world. people were just trying to survive and the pleasure of simple things held much more power. The world has changed a lot but humans haven’t changed much. It’s made a world where everyone has more power but no one has any better plans with the world, everyone is still trying to survive. So it shouldn’t be go go go always I believe we should proceed with caution and especially don’t try to mandate or force technology upon people because once upon a time doctors and big tobacco has the world convinced smoking was healthy. Information can be controlled for people to buy things like the newest computer or something more directly harmful like smoking.
We can see through experience that technology has improved many things. We can eradicate disease, feed more people, and improve living conditions. However, we can also see that technological advances have created concentrations of wealth and power. It may seem that humans haven't changed much as our technology has changed us. We must bring our social consciousness to the forefront of technological advances. Creating a better world begins with individuals who collectively change the status quo.
